What kind of church are you looking for?

I guess that’s what every pastor in America is asking.  I think that there  has been a moving toward building churches that appeal to the people.  I understand why we would want to do that.  But that may not be the best place to start.  Perhaps our first obligation is to God.  In essence, Jesus said in Matthew 16, “It’s my church and I will build it.”  What kind of church does Jesus want to build in our community, today?  I think it would be a church like the one described in Acts 2:42-47.    Think about it.  It would be a church that is....

  • Together in unity and singleness of heart (vv. 44, 46)
  • Filled with awe because of the presence and power of God (v. 43)
  • Holding everything in common  (v. 44)
  • Devoted to the Word, fellowship, communion and prayer (v. 42)
  • Ministering to everyone in need inside and outside the church  (v. 45)
  • Meeting together to worship and encourage one another (v. 46)
  • Praising and honoring God  (v. 47a)
  • Seeing God add to their number daily the ones being saved  (v. 47b)

Is this the kind of church you are looking for?  Well, your search is over.  You need look no farther than First Baptist Church, Chickasha.  I have pastored Southern Baptist churches for forty years before I came here in 1997.  As the pastor of First Baptist church, I can say without reservation that, “This is the best church I have ever pastored.  It may be the best church I have ever seen.”
